OBSERVER Photo by Justin Goetz Fredonia State’s Oskar Gerhardson (9) looks for a shot on goal against Plattsburgh during Saturday’s SUNYAC hockey matchup.

Noah Batis had a pair of goals and Joshua Davies made 34 saves in his first collegiate start in goal to carry Plattsburgh over Fredonia, 4-2, in SUNYAC men’s hockey Saturday at Steele Hall.

Marcus Ortiz scored both goals for the Blue Devils, who fell to 2-1-1 in the SUNYAC and 2-2-1 overall. The Cardinals — No. 5 in USCHO.com and No. 6 in D3Hockey.com rankings — improved to 2-1 overall and 1-1 in the conference.

Antoine Desnoyers and Cole Stallard put the Cardinals on top, 2-0. Ortiz answered on a power play at 19:32 of the first period from Jimmy Morgan and Samuel Wilbur.

Batis then scored the only goals of the second period as Plattsburgh increased its lead to 4-1.

Ortiz’s second goal of the game — and third of the season — came while the Blue Devils were skating with a two-man advantage at 8:39 of the third period. Oskar Gerhardson and Morgan picked up assists.

Batis earned the No. 1 star, Ortiz the No. 2, and Davies the No. 3.

Fredonia sophomore goaltender Eric Bogart stopped 37 shots.

The Blue Devils meet Morrisville in a home-and-home SUNYAC series next weekend — Friday at Steele Hall, Saturday in Morrisville.

Cross Country

Donovan, Mulcahy, Francis lead Fredonia runners

GLASSBORO, N.J. — Fredonia women lost just one spot in the team standings from last year while completing Saturday in the NCAA Division III Women’s Cross Country championship at Rowan University.

The Blue Devils were 12th this year — out of 43 full teams — compared to 11th a year ago. While none of the seven women qualified for nationals immediately, sophomore Brenna Donovan has an outside chance when the full field is announced Saturday night.

Donovan completed the 6,000-meter course in 21:55.5.

Fredonia finished 16th of 44 full teams Saturday at the NCAA Division III Men’s Cross Country Atlantic Regional.

Fifth-year senior Collin Mulcahy finished 24th and sophomore Ethan Francis (Dunkirk, N.Y./Dunkirk) was 28th in a field of 303 runners. They were eighth and 109th, respectively, at the 2015 Regional.

Fredonia’s other senior, Bobby Cooper, was 112th, junior Merlin  114th, and sophomore Cyd Scott 140th to round out the scoring quintet.

Displacement runners were junior Jack Erhard (Syracuse, N.Y./West Genesee) and academic sophomore Zak Kellerman. In addition, freshman Aidan Pollard (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst) made Fredonia’s Atlantic Regional contingent but did not run Saturday.

Mulcahy ran an even race, breaking out at 28th and moving up as close to 16th at the 2.8 kilometer mark. His final time for 8,000 meters was 25:05.2.

Francis was 24th at the first checkpoint, fell back to 45th at 2.8 kilometers, then rallied in the later parts to cross the line in 25:08.3.

Cooper — 108th in last year’s race — lost 30 spots from the first checkpoint to the finish while Joseph Jr., Scott, and Erhard all made significant advances through the pack as the race progressed. Joseph Jr. was 187th in 2015.
