Sherman tops Westfield to win tourney
WESTFIELD — Chris Robson scored 18 points and was named Westfield Tip-Off Tournament Most Valuable Player as the Wildcats topped the host team, 58-57, Saturday in boys high school basketball.
With the teams trading two-point leads throughout the contest, Sherman seemed to pull away with an eight-point advantage in the fourth quarter. However, the Wolverines clawed their way back into the contest and trailed by one with eight seconds left. After Sherman missed the front end of a 1-and-1, it was able to get the rebound, forcing Westfield to foul with three seconds left. Once again, Sherman missed the front end of a 1-and-1. This time, Westfield’s Shawn Horr got the rebound, took two dribbles and launched a prayer shot which fell short.
“It was a good game for us,” Westfield coach Bob North said. “It was close all the way. It’s good for our kids to play one of the better teams in the league tough. We beat Sherman last year in this tournament and then they beat us twice in the regular season. It’s just a mental thing. Sherman has won this tournament quite a bit. Our kids are building confidence.”
Robson had help as Jared Gleason charted 11 points and 15 rebounds while Kolby Parks had 14 points and three steals.
