Balanced attack leads Wolves past Panthers
WESTFIELD — The Westfield Wolverines (4-6, 3-2) used a balance scoring attack and solid defense to take down the Panama Panthers (1-11, 1-5), 51-37, Tuesday in CCAA West 2 boys high school basketball.
Eric Fermier and Kolby Bills each had 12 points while David Grayson had 11 and Mike Poletto finished with nine points.
“The starting five’s scoring was spread out real nice,” Westfield coach Bob North said. “It makes us hard to defend.”
Westfield jumped out to a 16-7 lead after the first quarter and maintained a 26-19 halftime lead. The home team went on to outscore Panama, 27-18, in the second half for the win.
The Wolverines used a stingy man-to-man defense to keep the Panthers at bay.
“We had more determination at the defensive end,” North said. “We try to play match-up zone. I thought we worked harder on the defensive end than we have been as of late.”
Statistically, Bills and Poletto combined for 11 rebounds while Grayson and Fermier combined for nine rebounds in the win.
Devin Chase had eight points and four assists to lead Panama. Tom Delahoy and Carter Morris combined for 16 rebounds.
Westfield will host Sherman on Thursday.
