Colom helps FHS to seventh place at Lockport tourney

LOCKPORT — Fredonia, led by Hector Colom’s first-place finish at 132 pounds, took seventh in the team standing at the Lockport Optimus Tournament on Saturday.

“It’s an extremely difficult tournament against quite challenging competition,” Fredonia head coach Joe Santilli said. “So they battled pretty tough. We only had seven wrestlers in the ‘A’ tournament and still finished quite well.”

Colom took down previously unbeaten Mason Wersinger of Spencerport, 16-0, in the finals while Giovani Russo took second at 126, losing 1-0 to Barker-Roy-Hart’s Brent Bachman. Also for the Hillbillies, Dalton Gardner finished second at 113 after having to forfeit the finals due to an injury, Ceric Kristan was sixth at 152 and Jordan Stebbins was sixth at 182.

“I was very pleased with our effort,” Santilli said. “Again, it was a difficult tournament and the guys battled through some tough competition and some sore bodies. Dakota got a little banged up, so we’ll see how we recover and get ready for the rest of the season.”

In the B tournament, Fredonia’s Yannie Acevedo took first at 220 while Antonio Pagan (106) and Gin Kim (132) were second-place finishers. Also, Dakota Planty (132) and Jake Skinner (220) took third.
