Dunkirk athletes do well at Border War Invitational

HOUGHTON — Dunkirk’s indoor track and field team competed at the Second annual Border War Invitational Saturday afternoon at Houghton College, and received several Top-10 finishes from its athletes.

In the boys’ events, Anthony Ruiz placed ninth in the 3,200-meter race in 10:26.24 while Chris Michalski and Nelson Estrada-Cruz boy qualified for the Sectional meet in the 600. Also, the 4×400 relay team of Estrada-Cruz, Nelson Rosario, Mike Sanchez and Michalski took eighth.

For the Lady Marauders, Julia Kennedy ran a season-best time in the 3,000 in 11:54.23, Jericha Petrella earned a Sectional spot in the 600 in a time of 1:45.17 and Emma Seiders took second in the same even in 1:37.84. Seiders time was also a season best and state-standard time. Rush-Henrietta’s Sammy Watson set a new national record with her first-place finish.

Also in the girls’ events, Jaylah Cossin qualified for the Sectionals in the 1,500 with her time of 5:16.89, Emilee Hanlon and Seiders finished fifth and sixth, respectively in the 300 an Hanlon took third in the high jump with her height of 5-feet, 1-inch. Elsewhere, Faith Rivera qualified for Sectionals in the long jump with her leap of 15-2 and the 4×400 relay team of Kylie Procknal, Rivera, Petrella and Hanlon took fifth in a time of 4:21.27.

“This was a fantastic meet with great competition,” Dunkirk head coach Adam Woelfle said. “To see our kids have success is fantastic, especially at a meet like this. And to see times get faster and more kids make Sectionals is great for their confidence.

“Also, to see and have our kids race and watch a potential Olympian was awesome,” Woelfle added. “I continue to be proud of these kids week in and week out. They are putting in so much effort and it’s paying off.”

Dunkirk is back in action next week at the Houghton Invitational.
