Free throws decisive as men fall to Geneseo

Fredonia fell in overtime to Geneseo 93-83 in SUNYAC men’s basketball Tuesday at the Steele Hall Fieldhouse.

Kevin Crockett scored the first nine points in overtime on consecutive three-point shots and a conventional three-point play to give his team an insurmountable 76-67 lead.

Fredonia missed its first six shots and had a turnover while they were being outscored 10-0 during the stretch.

Ian Helps had 18 points and 13 rebounds for the Blue Devils, who were plagued by foul trouble. Kareem Brown also had 18 points, Richard De La Cruz added 15 and Dante Williams had 10.

Brown made a driving layup with 5.1 seconds left to tie the game, 67-67, and send it into overtime.

John Decker led Geneseo with 25 points, Justin Ringen had 23, Crockett 11 and Jack Eisenberg 10.

Fredonia had five players foul out of the game. The foul trouble was a deciding factor as Geneseo went 31 of 38 from the line compared to 10 of 15 for Fredonia.

The Blue Devils, needing the win to enhance their playoff chances, fell to 3-4 in the conference and 6-8 overall. They came into the game on a three-game winning streak.

Geneseo improved to 5-1 in the conference and 10-3 overall. The Knights have won five straight meetings at Steele Hall.

Fredonia entertains Brockport in another SUNYAC game at 5:30 p.m. Friday.
