Total team effort

Balanced scoring leads Steelers past City Honors/Cardinal O’Hara

It was a total team effort for the Dunkirk-Fredonia Steelers as the team won its fifth game in a row on Sunday at Steele Hall.

Mike Meredith, Christopher Buchanan, Carter D’Agostino and Brandon Prentiss each had a goal and an assist in leading the Steelers past City Honors/Cardinal O’Hara, 6-1, to take over second place in the Western New York High School Club Hockey League’s White Division standings. But the highlight of the game may have been the coast-to-coast short-handed goal scored by defenseman Nolan Mages at 1:45 into the third period. Mages got by at least three City Honors/O’Hara skaters and then tipped the puck through the five-hole of the goaltender. It made the score 4-1, but for all intents and purposes, shut the door on the opposition.

D’Agostino opened the scoring 2:42 into the first, deflecting home a rebound on a shot taken by Nicholas Pchelka. Meredith scored 11 minutes later to make it 2-0 after one period of play.

City Honors/Cardinal O’Hara, on the power play, narrowed the margin halfway through the second at 2-1, but Stephen Aldrich and the Steelers answered 30 seconds later to regain the two-goal advantage at 3-1 after two periods.

For the game, the Steelers outshot City Honors/Cardinal O’Hara, 36-22. Goaltender Nicolas Novelli had 21 saves and received excellent defensive support from Christian Michalski, Zach Rybak, Austin Lewis, Jackson Taylor, Michael Persch and Mages.

Cole Tippens and Taylor Mattoon also were credited with assists for Dunkirk-Fredonia, which is 8-4-1, and plays on the road against Buffalo on Wednesday evening.
