Bartlett sweeps SUNYAC diving events

BUFFALO — Fredonia senior Meghan Bartlett won the SUNYAC 1-meter springboard title Saturday to go along with the 3-meter title she won Thursday.

Bartlett’s winning score of 490.65 points was a new conference meet record. It included a six-dive score of 297.65 points during the Saturday night finals.

Equal to the task was fellow senior Sam Kowalewski, who earned 272.80 points Saturday night as part of her 455.45 total points to finish in fifth place.

The SUNYAC championship meet double earned Bartlett the SUNYAC Female Diver of the Meet Award. The Male Diver of the Year Award went to Fredonia senior Arron Carlson, who doubled off the men’s springboard boards during the four-day meet.

In addition, Fredonia diving coach Ryan Fuller was selected as SUNYAC Co-Diving Coach of the Year.

Meanwhile, the Fredonia women finished eighth at the conclusion of the SUNYAC Swimming & Diving championship Saturday night.

Blue Devil swimmers who figured into the team scoring Saturday were:

Maddie Miller and Lydia Gaughran in the 200-yard butterfly. Miller finished 11th in 2:22.42 and Gaughran 14th in 2:27.97. Miller’s preliminary time was 2:22.04 while Gaughran came in at 2:42.82.

Taylor Chwalinski in the 100 freestyle. She finished 13th in 56.18 seconds after a preliminary time of 56.12 seconds.

Alyson Baumann in the 200 backstroke. Her finals time of 2:18.56 was good for 15th place. Her preliminary time was 2:19.78.

Caroline Bilotti in the 200 breaststroke — 14th in consolation finals in 2:38.38 after a preliminary time of 2:38.24.

In the timed 1,650 freestyle, Chelsea Spiegel finished 15th win a time of 19:28.35.

Fredonia picked up a majority of its points Saturday in 1-meter diving, led by SUNYAC Diver of the Meet Bartlett. She won Saturday’s 1-meter competition after winning the 3-meter on Thursday.

They also earned seventh-place points in the 400 freestyle relay. The quartet of Baumann, Spiegel, Aurielle Marvin and Chwalinski touched out in 3:45.44.

By finishing ahead of Buffalo State in the team standings, the women earned two points in the season-long Battle of Lake Erie series. The Bengals were ninth.

In the men’s events, another school and conference record for Fredonia senior Adam Clouthier highlighted the Blue Devils’ third-place finish at Saturday’s SUNYAC Swimming & Diving championship meet.

Two awards also went to senior diver Arron Carlson during a ceremony at the end of the meet. Carlson, who doubled off the men’s springboards during the four-day meet, was named Male Diver of the Meet and won the James Fulton Award for athletic, academic, and lifetime achievement.

Clouthier, a graduate of Fairport High School in suburban Rochester, touched out in 2:04.06 — besting the previous conference record of Potsdam’s Alexander Taylor. Taylor swam 2:05.48 in 2013, which Clouthier equaled during Saturday’s preliminaries. That also took down his own school record of 2:09.77 set in 2015 and shaved nearly nine seconds off his pre-meet seed time.

Clouthier was also the 100 breaststroke champ Friday in school and conference record time.

Other point-producing performances Saturday by Fredonia swimmers included:

Jake Favret, who was ninth in the 200 breaststroke in 2;08.91. He advanced to the final as the No. 8 seed with a preliminary time of 2:12.42.

Troy Lubanski finished fifth in the 200 backstroke in 1:57.46. He was eighth coming out of preliminaries at 1:59.24.

Liam Jones tied for sixth in the 100 freestyle in 47.61 seconds. He qualified at No. 8 with a preliminary time of 47.89 seconds.

Bill Bradley (Dunkirk) moved up to sixth in the 200 butterfly after being seeded eighth with a preliminary time 1:59.39. His finals time was 1:58.29.

Consolation finalists included Nathan Link in the 200 breaststroke after a preliminary time of 2:03.12. He finished 11th in 2:01.74. Also, Jonah Adeson finished 15th in the 200 butterfly in 2:05.54. His qualifying time was 2:03.52. Ben Chatley finished 10th in the 1,650 freestyle — essentially a mile in distance — during the timed final Saturday afternoon. He covered the distance in 17:55.54.

The meet ended with a sixth place finish in the 400 freestyle as Favret, Lubanski, Bradley, and Graham Jones touched out in 3:14.02. The Blue Devils also earned two Lake Erie Cup points by finishing ahead of Buffalo State in the team standings.
