Bulldogs get first win of year

OBSERVER Staff Report

BROCTON — The Brocton Bullldogs (1-15, 1-9) received a team effort in picking up their first win of the season Thursday with a 53-44 victory over the Cassadaga Valley Cougars (5-11, 2-8) in CCAA West 2 boys high school basketball.

“The way they were jumping around and it felt like they won the sectional championship,” Brocton coach Matt Seiberg said. “It was nice to see some smiles after a game.”

The Bulldogs jumped out to a 17-8 lead after the first quarter, watched the Cougars tie the score late in the third quarter, but made key buckets down the stretch to avoid the winless season.

“Both times we played Cassadaga Valley, it’s been a great matchup,” Seiberg said. “They didn’t give up (Thursday) either.  Overall, it is a great matchup. We got up to a 17-3 lead to start game and they didn’t give up. They crawled back into it. This is definitely the fist game where multiple players had a great game. It’s the most balanced scoring we had all year. It was a nice team win, but Cassadaga Valley didn’t let it come easy. It was a good basketball game. It was fun to watch.”

Ronald Brown led the scoring with 14 points while Johnethen Spicer had 13 points, nine rebounds and seven blocks for the winners. Tyler DeRosier had eight rebounds.

Brocton held a 25-20 lead at halftime and a slim 37-31 lead after the third quarter.  The Cougars cut the lead to four points in the fourth quarter, but Spicer and Brown each hit key 3-pointers to extend the lead.

Brandon Chamberlain led Cassadaga Valley with a game-high 10 points and seven rebounds. CJ Kubera had four steals in defeat.

The Bulldogs return to action Monday at Panama.
