Dunkirk 4×400 relay team off to states

HOUGHTON — Members of the Dunkirk boys and girls indoor track and field team are headed to the New York State Public High School Athletic Association’s Indoor Track and Field championships after strong performances Saturday at the Section VI meet held at Houghton College.

The Lady Marauders’ 4×400-meter relay team of Emilee Hanlon, Jaylah Cossin, Jericha Petrella and Emma Seiders took first in 4:04.02, re-setting their own school record while setting a new Sectional record in the process. The quartet, along with Faith Rivera, will travel to run in the state meet at the Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex on Staten Island next Saturday.

Seiders also took first in the 600 in 1:36.55, lowering her own team record, while also qualifying for the national meet.

Elsewhere, Hanlon was first in the high jump at 5-5, breaking her own team record of 5-3.

Also for Dunkirk the Dunkirk girls, the 4×800 relay team of Ashley Olrogg, Julia Fred, Julia Kennedy and Juliana Flick lowered their time to 10:52.12, a 15-second improvement that netted them 10th place on Saturday.

In the boys’ events, the 4×800 team of Christopher Michalski, Anthony Ruiz, Jonathan Pulver and Nelson Estrada-Cruz took fifth in a new school-record time of 8:44.07 while Mike Sanchez ran the 300 in 37.79 to finish eighth.

In other events, the foursome of Jonah Rosas, Sanchez, Tirado and Nelson Rosario took sixth overall in the 4×200 in 1:38.74.

Head coach Adam Woelfle was also named the Coach of the Year in Class C.

“I couldn’t be more proud of all these athletes,” Woelfle said. “They came out and ran their hearts out and all the relays had season bests. Individuals performed well, too. We peaked where we needed to. The attitude these athletes had put them in the right place, along with the efforts of my entire staff. I can’t thank them enough either.”

For Fredonia, Emily Brown earned a trip to Staten Island in the 1,500. After finishing third in 5:02.2, she was awarded her spot at the state meet when the second-place finisher opted not to run next week.

Brown also helped the 4×400 team to a fourth-place finish in 4:23. Joining Brown on that team were Lydia Lanski, Sydney Swan and Fotini Landis.

Claire Stokes took fourth in the high jump in 5-1, Lanski was seventh in the 55 hurdles in 9.3 seconds and Swan was seventh in the 600 in 1:44.

In the boys events, Josh Johnson broke the school record in the 1,600 in 4:50.42. Alex Wills held the old mark of 4:50.43, which he set in 2010.
