Falkner helps Lady Cougars advance in C-1 playoffs
FALCONER — Mikayla Falkner scored 14 points as the No. 8 Cassadaga Valley Lady Cougars topped the No. 9 Salamanca Lady Warriors, 33-20, Tuesday in Section VI Class C-1 pre-quarterfinal girls high school basketball action.
It was a slow start for both teams as Salamanca held a 6-5 lead after the opening eight minutes. However, Cassadaga Valley found an offensive groove in the second quarter and never looked back.
“We came out a little slow,” Cassadaga Valley coach Christine Krenzer said. “I called a timeout and had the girls gather their focus. All the girls contributed offensively and defensively and we swung the momentum in our direction. The girls decided to play hard and we are pretty happy.”
The Lady Cougars outscored the Lady Warriors, 18-8 in the second half.
Amber Morrison and Falkner combined for 19 rebounds while Paige Hitchcock had seven boards in the win.
For Salamanca, Dessa Dowdy had 10 points and four rebounds while Amber McGonigle had 11 rebounds in defeat.
The Lady Cougars now travel to No. 1 Allegany-Limestone on Thursday.
