Fredonia cruises past Franklinville, 69-38, in regular season finale

OBSERVER Staff Report

FRANKLINVILLE — Fredonia (14-6) eased past non-league foe Franklinville (17-3), 69-38, Saturday afternoon in the regular season girls basketball finale for both schools.

The Lady Hillbillies jumped out to a slim 13-12 lead after the first quarter, before pulling ahead 31-20 at the break. Then, in the third quarter, Fredonia increased its lead to 47-31, before outscoring the home team 22-7 over the game’s final eight minutes.

“We had great offensive movement and we were able to get the ball to people for wide-open shots,” Fredonia head coach Carol Zirkle said.

The Lady Hillbillies were paced by Hannah Cybart’s game-high 24 points. The 1,000-point scorer also added nine rebounds while twin sister Caitlyn Cybart added 13 points, 14 rebounds and four assists. Meanwhile, Katie Price chipped in 16 points, six assists and four rebounds while Grace Morrison had six rebounds in the win.

Franklinville was led by freshman Dani Haskell, who had 19 points, which was 15 fewer than she had in the Lady Hillbillies’ 51-46 win over the Lady Panthers on Jan. 7.

“I was very pleased with the defensive effort of Zoya Katta and Morgan St. George and then Hannah Cybart,” Zirkle said, referring to the way those three played defense against Haskell. “And I thought the rest of the team did a good job of stepping up and helping. And we had good rotations (Saturday) and we did a tremendous job of hitting the boards.”

Also for Franklinville, Abby McCoy had nine points in the loss.

Fredonia, the sixth seed in the Section VI, Class B-2 playoffs, will host No. 11 Tonawanda on Tuesday at 7 p.m. in a prequarterfinal matchup while Franklinville, the top seed in Class D, is off until Wednesday, March 1, when they will face either No. 5 Clymer or No. 4 Pine Valley in the semifinals at Jamestown Community College.
