Gabel shines in first varsity start, Gowanda tops Silver Creek
GOWANDA — The Gowanda Lady Panthers (3-13, 2-5) received a much-needed boost from an unexpected player in taking down the Silver Creek Black Knights, 39-27, Wednesday in CCAA East 1 girls high school basketball.
Paige Gabel, a jayvee callup before Wednesday’s game scored nine points and grabbed 13 rebounds in her varsity debut.
“She played outstanding,” Gowanda coach Jenn DePasquale said. “We are short with injuries. I had to bring her up. She was one of the best players on the team (Wednesday). She started and I kept her in the whole game.”
When asked if Gabel will return to the jayvee team, DePasquale responded, “I am heeping her up (on varsity).”
Gowanda held a 9-2 lead after the first quarter and an 18-9 halftime lead. The Lady Panthers maintained a 10-point lead throughout the second half.
Alexis Hawkins did her part in the win with 11 points, 15 rebounds, three assists and three blocks. Miya Scanlan had nine rebounds to go along with her nine points and three assists for the winners.
Silver Creek’s Abby Rice had nine points in a losing effort.
The Lady Panthers return to action Friday at Allegany-Limestone.
