No. 3 Franklinville 68,
No. 6 Pine Valley 49
FRANKLINVILLE — No. 3 Franklinville (17-4) proved to be the fiercer of the two Panthers Friday night, as it topped No. 6 Pine Valley (11-10), 68-49, Friday night in Section VI, Class D boys basketball quarterfinal action.
Franklinville outscored Pine Valley, 13-6, in the first quarter and 20-14 in the second to take a 13-point advantage into the break. In the second half, Franklinville outscored Pine Valley, 35-29, for the lopsided final.
“I’m proud of the boys, they worked hard,” Pine Valley head coach Dave Pihlblad said. “We held their leading scorer, Sam Erickson to seven points. Trent Mihalko did a fantastic job on him, but their two other guys stepped up big, and it’s tough to beat a team with that many weapons out there.”
The other two players Pihlblad was referring to were Darren Clark, who finished with a game-hight 30 points, and Isaac Kopp, who added 19.
Meanwhile, for Pine Valley, Dylan Chase had a team-high 17 points, Gilberto Ortiz had 12 points and six rebounds, Zach Mansfield added 10 points and five assists, Stephan Crisanti had eight points and Mihalko nabbed five steals in the loss.
Next up for Franklinville is a semifinal matchup against No. 2 Ellicottville on Tuesday at Jamestown Community College. Tip-off is scheduled for 8:15 p.m.
