Schroeder hits game-winner at buzzer in Eagles win
NORTH COLLINS — North Collins junior Zachary Schroeder scored on a buzzer-beater Wednesday night to lift the Eagles past Cattaraugus-Little Valley (0-8), 56-54, in CCAA East 2 boys high school basketball action.
With the score tied, 54-all, the Eagles had the ball with 12 seconds left. Schroeder went in for a layup and missed, but he grabbed his own rebound and went up with it again. This time, the ball bounced around, hung on the rim and finally dropped as the buzzer sounded for the game-winning basket.
“He played great all night long,” North Collins coach Jan Warren said, noting Schroeder had 13 of his 15 points in the second half. “I told him to start shooting more and he took it to heart. He had two treys. He became a bigger part of the offense and asserted himself. He was huge.”
Brandon Zielinski contributed in the win with 13 points and 12 rebounds.
The last time the two teams met, Zielinski scored 37 points.
“Their whole defensive scheme was to stop Brandon,” Warren noted.
Dylan Mercado also had 10 points in the win.
Now the Eagles take (4-10, 2-6) on Ellicottville, which is ranked No. 8 in the state, tonight.
