Blue Devils earn softball sweep Saturday at Beach Blast; Feldman shines at Tufts

Special to the OBSERVER

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — Fredonia won both its games Saturday during the Virginia Wesleyan University Beach Blast.

Game 1

Fredonia 7, Eastern 2

The game featured a 16-hit attack, including a 4-for-4 performance (two doubles, two singles) by junior Katelyn Dennis and three hits by junior Nikki Lent, as Fredonia beat Eastern.

The first Fredonia home run of the season was struck by freshman Madison Cooley leading off the fourth inning while senior Khee Nance, sophomore Cassie Herman and senior Erin Mushtare had two hits each. Freshman right-hander Katie Yudin was the beneficiary, as she earned her first collegiate win with 4-2/3 innings of work. Fellow freshman Sam Seegar relieved in the fifth and got an inning-ending strikeout to get out of a jam. Seegar allowed one hit over the final 2-1/3 innings.

Game 2

Fredonia 8, Shenandoah 0, 5 innings

Dennis picked up where she left off and sophomore right-hander Emily Shellenberger tossed a five-inning shutout as the Blue Devils completed a sweep of their Saturday games with a win over Shenandoah, improving to 3-1 in the process.

Dennis had two singles and three RBIs in her first two at-bats to extend her streak to six straight hits. Nance and Lent stayed hot, too, with two hits each.

Senior catcher Sarah Cuillo also had two hits while Shellenberger allowed three hits and struck out two as she picked up her first win of the season. Shenandoah (3-5) came into the game averaging just under 10 runs per game.

What’s next?

The Blue Devils are off until Thursday afternoon when they take on Nebraska Wesleyan, the first of 12 games during The Spring Games in and around Clermont, Fla.

Indoor Track & Field

Feldman sets school mark, moves up 400 list

MEDFORD, Mass. — Fredonia junior Brittany Feldman set a school indoor record in the women’s 400 meters during Saturday’s Tufts Final Qualifier.

Feldman’s 57.05 seconds has her setting at No. 8 on qualifying list for the NCAA Division III Indoor Track & Field championship meet next weekend in Napierville, Ill.

She started the weekend at No. 15. The top 17 women in each event are invited to the national meet.

The record Feldman broke was her own, a 57.16 at last March’s NCAA D-III indoor meet. She has run the distance faster outdoors (55.65 seconds). Her indoor season-best before Saturday was 57.31 seconds.

Three other Devils completed at Tufts. On the women’s side, junior Sarah Couperus finished sixth in the triple jump at 10.45 meters (34 feet, 3-1/2 inches). She also competed in the women’s high jump. In the men’s 35-pound weight throw, senior Kyle Brown finished fifth with a toss of 16.59 meters (54-5 1/4). In the men’s pole vault, junior Justyn Haines cleared 4.51 meters (14-8-1/2).
