CLERMONT, Fla. — Fredonia rallied Thursday morning for a 9-7 women’s softball win over Fairleigh Dickinson-Florham on the Blue Devils’ final day at The Spring Games.

A two-run homer by senior Erin Mushtare triggered a three-run sixth and a two-run triple by senior Sarah Cuillo capped a four-run seventh as the Blue Devils overcome a 6-2 deficit and improved to 10-5.

Freshman right-hander Sam Seegar earned the win in relief. She allowed one run on four hits over the final 2 2/3 innings. She is 3-1 this spring.

Mushtare led the 12-hit attack with three hits, including her first collegiate homer — a liner over the fence in right-center. Also connecting for the first time as a collegian was sophomore Mallory Mecca with a solo blast to left to tie the game at 2-2 in the top of the fourth. Mecca also singled after Mushtare homered in the sixth and drew a bases-loaded walk to tie the game 6-6 in the seventh.

Khee Nance (Dunkirk) had an RBI single to put Fredonia on top 1-0 in the first. Cuillo had an RBI single in the sixth ahead of the game-tying walk to Mecca. The Blue Devils then took the lead, 7-6, on a wild pitch before Cuillo lined a triple inside the right-field line and out of the reach of the diving right-fielder.

Two runs scored to push the Fredonia lead to 9-6.

FDU-Florham got one run back in the last of the seventh before Seegar induced two groundouts and a strikeout to end the game.

Fredonia closes out its Florida trip this afternoon vs. Hood. First pitch from Clermont’s Hancock Park is scheduled for 12:30 p.m.

Hood hands Devils 5-2 getaway loss

CLERMONT, Fla. — Hood College sent Fredonia packing from its Florida trip with a 5-2 loss Thursday at The Spring Games.

Hood’s Sophie Leaman pitched a complete game and helped her own cause with a homer and an RBI single. The latter came during a tiebreaking three-run sixth inning.

The Blue Devils — 7-5 on the Florida trip and 10-6 overall — trailed 2-0 before tying the score with single runs in the fourth and fifth innings.

Erin Mushtare led off the fourth with a double off the base of the fence in left. She scored on a one-out single to center by Lauren Pixley. In the fifth, Nikki Lent beat out a soft liner into the hole at shortstop. She advanced all the way to third on a sacrifice bunt by Madison Cooley. After a hit batter and walk loaded the bases, Mushtare singled to right to tie the game at 2-2.

The Blue Devils left the bases loaded, the third out recorded when Pixley sent a liner back through the box which Leaman snared. It was the second time Fredonia squandered a bases-loaded chance. Back-to-back bunt singles by Lent and Cooley and a one-out walk in the first preceded two strikeouts by Leaman. She finished the game with 11 strikeouts.

In addition to Lent and Mushtare, senior Khee Nance (Dunkirk) had two hits and raised her team-leading batting average to .396.

Freshman right-hander Sam Seegar was the losing pitcher. She was on the winning pitcher earlier in the day as the Blue Devils rallied for a 9-7 victory over Fairleigh Dickinson-Fordham.

The Blue Devils are off for 15 days, then visit SUNYAC preseason favorite Cortland on March 31.
