CCAA East 2 announces boys basketball All-Stars

OBSERVER File Photo: Pine Valley’s Gilberto Ortiz, pictured, earned CCAA East 2 honorable mention following the 2016-17 season.

The postseason was cut short for the Pine Valley Panthers as they lost to Franklinville in the first round of the playoffs. However, losing to the team that travelled to the state semifinals doesn’t sound so bad in the end.

Pine Valley senior Dylan Chase was the leading factor in the Panthers’ success this season and earned first-team honors on the Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association East 2 All-Stars.

Chase finished with a team-high in points, assists and steals. He averaged 14.7 points per game, tallied 86 assists in 21 games and 62 steals.

Elliot Bowen, junior of Ellicottville, received the League MVP for the 2016-17 season.

Rounding out the first team were Bowen; Sam Erickson, junior of Franklinville; Griffin Chudy, junior of Ellicottville; Isaac Kopp, junior of Franklinville; and Darren Clarke, junior of Franklinville.

North Collins’ Brandon Zielinski earned a spot on the second team in the league. The junior was the leading scorer for the Eagles with 18.1 ppg as well as a vacuum off the glass, as he grabbed 126 rebounds in the season. Pine Valley junior Zach Mansfield, Forestville’s Kalvin Stanbro and Lewis Markham made the second team as well. Mansfield averaged 13.5 ppg, a total of 50 assists and 106 rebounds in the 2016-17 campaign.

Junior Markham led the Hornets in scoring with 11.8 ppg with fellow junior Stanbro tossing in 7.6 ppg. Markham threw 31 assists with 87 rebounds, while Stanbro pulled down 116 rebounds and 40 steals.

Rounding out the second team were Zielinski; Mansfield; Stanbro; Markham; Austin Grinols, junior of Ellicottville; Kellen Martin, senior of Cattaraugus/Little Valley.

Ellicottville coach Dave McCann was awarded the CCAA East 2 Coach of the Year.

Receiving honorable mentions were Forestville senior Trent Hartloff, Pine Valley senior Gilberto Ortiz, North Collins junior Zachary Schroeder, Cattaraugus/Little Valley junior Austin Baker, Franklinville juniors Brock Blecha and Dylan Burton, Ellicottville sophomore Steven Rowland and junior Noah Stuve.

Forestville earned the sportsmanship award and Hartloff earned the sportsmanship player honor.
