Devils extend win streak to four

Fredonia defeated Alfred State, 7-3, in non-conference baseball Monday, to extend its winning streak to four games.

Clinging to a one-run lead in the eighth, Liam Kelly lined an opposite-field bases-clearing triple inside the line in right to score three runs. It was Kelly’s second hit on the day.

The Blue Devils (15-13) used five pitchers with starter Jake Harford (Silver Creek) working two scoreless innings before giving way to a string of relievers. Because the use of multiple pitchers was prearranged, Harford — who struck out five and gave up one hit — was awarded the win. He improved to 2-4.

Lucas Schaefer picked up his second save. He pitched out of jams in the seventh and eighth innings to preserve the non-league win.

Fredonia also got solid relief pitching from Noah West, who pitched gave up one hit in one inning of work, and Zach Lyman, who fanned three in three hitless innings.

The Pioneers (4-25) pulled within a run with three runs in the seventh. Pedro Mora slapped a two-run single to left center ahead of a double by Jesse Swan. Ryan Landers exited and Lucas Schaefer came on with runners on second and third with two outs. Crochetti made a diving catch of a sinking liner to end the inning. Schaefer then pitched out of a second and third jam in the eighth.

Top offensive players included Alexio Medina, whose two-run single capped a two-run third inning; Joshua Crocetti, who had two singles and two stolen bases; Matt Wilhelm, with an RBI double; and Ciro Frontale, with two hits and an RBI.

The loss dropped the Pioneers to 4-25.

The Blue Devils stay in non-conference competition Wednesday with a road trip to Penn State Behrend. They return to SUNYAC play with a three-game series with Brockport this Friday and Saturday
