At the Feb. 20 Chautauqua Sports Hall of Fame’s 36th annual induction banquet, several endowed Legacy Awards were presented to outstanding high school athletes. The Ken Martin Legacy Award was given to Coach Vince Gullo of the Fredonia High School baseball team because the honoree, Fredonia Class of 2016 alum Jarod Burmaster, was unable to attend the banquet. However, Burmaster was at the NJCAA Region 3 Division III doubleheader at Diethrick Park in Jamestown on Tuesday as a member of the Niagara County Community College baseball team. The Ken Martin Legacy Award is given to the outstanding high school baseball player in Chautauqua County and is named in honor of one of the finest baseball and softball players in the history of the county. A shortstop who got to every ball hit to the left side of the infield with soft hands and a rifle for an arm, Martin was also a feared hitter for many championship-winning teams in the area. Joining Burmaster, fourth from the left, are Kevin Martin, Ken’s son; Pam Pullan, Ken’s daughter; Gloria Martin, Ken’s wife; Keith Martin, Ken’s son and Jamestown Community College athletic director; and Randy Anderson, Chautauqua Sports Hall of Fame president.
