Lady Marauders hold off Albion, 5-2

The Dunkirk Lady Marauders edged Albion, 4-3, Thursday in non-league high school softball.

Monica Pokoj was the winning pitcher and also provided what proved to be the game-winning hit.

In the circle, Pokoj fanned nine, walked two and scattered three hits.

At the plate, Pokoj had an RBI hit in the third inning for the winning run. Earlier in that frame, Alexis Ruiz put the ball in play and Albion committed an error, allowing Olivia Yerico-Piazza and Alexis Tofil to cross home plate.

Dunkirk had a chance to add to its lead in the sixth inning with the bases loaded and no outs. However, the next three batters struck out to end the threat.

“Overall, I feel we played OK,” Dunkirk coach Michelle Poweski said. “We still need to keep setting the bar high and push through. It’s nice to get a win and play during spring break to prepare us for a non-league game and two league games next week. It’s nice to get a game in so the girls can stay focused.”
