Burr, Gens to compete at Sectionals tournament

LAKEWOOD — Four newcomers will make the trip to Lancaster High School for the Section VI boys tennis championships when they get underway Monday.

Fredonia’s Neil Gens and Matt Burr, Olean’s Filip Murawski and Frewsburg’s Jameson Sposato each took the next step in their journeys with a pair of wins Wednesday at the Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association championships at the Lakewood Family YMCA.

Gens beat Maple Grove’s Porter DeMink in the Round of 16, 6-0 and 6-2, before topping Frewsburg’s Tyler Marchincin in the quarterfinals, 6-0 and 6-1. Gens’ teammate Matt Burr downed Jamestown’s Ryan Whisner, 6-0 and 6-2, in his opening match before defeating Westfield’s Josh Kitchen, 6-2 and 6-1, later in the day. Murawski beat Allegany-Limestone’s Jay Spencer, 6-3 and 6-4, in the Round of 16 before topping Salamanca’s Mike Collins, 7-5 and 6-1, in the quarterfinals. Sposato became the final sectional qualifier by defeating Jamestown’s Shane Federko, 6-0 and 6-2, in his first match of the day before defeating Panama’s Elliot Jackson, 6-0 and 6-1, in the quarterfinals.

The county doubles championships will begin today at 11 a.m. Eight teams will play in the first round while another eight will have byes into the Round of 16. By the end of the day the four doubles sectional representatives will be decided.

The four singles winners and four doubles winners will return to the Lakewood Family YMCA on Friday to determine the county champion as well as seeds for the sectional championships.
