Hillbillies complete perfect season on the courts

On Monday, the Fredonia Hillbillies (12-0, 10-0) completed their under undefeated season and won the league championship with a 5-0 home-win versus Panama in Division 1 tennis.

Fredonia’s Neil Gens defeated Carson Heimburg, 6-1, 6-1, in the first singles. Matt Burr defeated Quinn Payne in a 6-0, 6-0 sweep in the second doubles. Josh Thompson finished out the third singles defeating Nathan Radka, 6-2, 6-2.

Jimmy Rush and Max Kinkela won, 6-2, 6-1, in their first doubles match against Elliot Jackson and Claire Heimburg. Salvy Flores and Dan Gifford were victorious in the second doubles, defeating Panama’s Laurel Rensel and Eric Sweeney, 6-2, 6-3.

“This is our second time winning the league championship since 2000,” said Fredonia coach Lisa Johnston. “Gens went undefeated in first singles, Burr went undefeated, Rush and Kinkela were undefeated in first doubles and Gifford and Flores were undefeated in their matches together in second singles.”

Johnston added that, “This has been one of the best seasons I’ve had coaching here at Fredonia.”

After winning the league champhionship, Fredonia will compete for the county championship this week at the Lakewood Family YMCA.

The singles compete Wednesday while the doubles matches will be held on Thursday.
