North Collins shuts out Brocton, 14-0

OBSERVER Staff Report

NORTH COLLINS — The No. 3 North Collins Lady Eagles had an impressive showing against the No. 6 Lady Bulldogs, defeating them 14-0, in Section VI Class D playoff softball.

Rebecca Cyrek was nearly perfect on the day. She threw for the complete-game shutout, and gave up only one hit and no walks, along with seven strikeouts.

Her window of opportunity for the perfect game was closed in the fourth inning when Brocton Lady Bulldog, Jen Potter, blooped a single over first base for the only Brocton hit on the day.

Potter also started on the mound for Brocton. She threw all seven innings and gave up 14 runs (ten earned) on 14 hits with two walks and three strikeouts.

The Lady Eagles were on fire on offense.

Morgan Lawton had a huge performance, jacking two home runs, totaling three hits on the day with two RBIs. Alexa English had a 3-for-4 effort at the plate with a two-run home run and had four RBIs for the day. Cyrek, Rebecca Holmes and Bailey Romano each chipped in two hits apiece. Romano had a double and two RBIs.

“We just came out in the bottom of the first and started hitting the ball,” said Lady Eagles coach Jan Warren. “They just came out swinging the bats today and they hit the ball hard.”

“We make a lot of plays on defense,” Warren continued. “Rebecca (Cyrek) makes a lot of teams hit the ball. Between her changing speeds ‘on her pitches and hitting different locations,, we keep opposing batters off-balance. I couldn’t be prouder of how they all were playing.”

No. 3 North Collins will face No. 2 Panama in the next round of the Class D playoffs.

Section VI Class C1

Cassadaga Valley 8, Tapestry 1

BUFFALO — The No. 3 Cassadaga Valley Lady Cougars traveled to Buffalo and won, 8-1, in a Section VI Class C1 softball against the No. 2 Tapestry Lady Thunderhawks.

Alyssa Hahn picked up the win on the mound for the Lady Cougars. She threw a complete game and nearly had a no-hit shutout for the day.

Hahn had the no-hitter going until the bottom of the seventh inning. Tapestry’s Julia Kilonski chipped a single and the no-no became no more. Kilonski eventually scored on a fielder’s choice to end the shutout.

Hahn finished the game with 10 strikeouts, with just one walk, one run and the lone single in the seventh.

On offense, Brittyn LeBaron was the star for Cassadaga Valley, totaling two hits, including a double and three RBIs. Hahn and Jenna Caskey each batted a double for the day.

“Not sure if they (Cassadaga Valley) took them a bit lightly,” Cassadaga Valley coach Ken Balling wondered. “Sometimes teams down here tend to do that to the Buffalo schools. They (Tapestry) were a solid team. I think they came in and took them a bit lightly. It’s a good thing that Hahn pitched so well.”

“I just thought we were a better team than that,” Balling continued. “We’ve got Chautauqua Lake in Dunkirk for the Sectional final on Thursday. Everybody knows Chautauqua Lake’s got a really solid team, and if we don’t pick it up I don’t know if we’ll be able to beat them.”

The No. 3 Lady Cougars will take on the No. 4 Lady Thunderbirds in Dunkirk on Thursday in the Section VI C1 final.

Chautauqua Lake 4, Cleveland Hill 2

CHEEKTOWAGA — The No. 4 Chautauqua Lake Lady Thunderbirds defeated the No. 1 Cleveland Hill Golden Eagles, 4-2, in the Section VI Class C1 semifinal.

Olivia Anderson took the win on the mound for the Lady Thunderbirds, striking out 13, walking three and giving up only four hits.

The Lady Thunderbirds battled back from a 2-0 deficit in the bottom of the third.

The Lady Golden Eagles put their first run on the board in the bottom of the first on a misplay at third. The Lady Golden Eagles then put another run on the board in the bottom of the third with a couple hits, a walk and an error.

After that the Lady Thunderbirds battled back and fought every inning to get the lead.

With two outs right away in the top of the fourth the Lady Thunderbirds began their rally.

Katelyn Fardink hit a single, and then on a fielder’s choice by Kendra Keyser, Fardink advanced to third while Keyser moved to second on an error. Jenna Briggs then reached first base via an error which allowed Fardink to score the first run for the Lady Thunderbirds. The inning ended with a pick off play.

With the score 2-1 in the bottom of the fifth, the Lady Thunderbirds once again rallied and plated two runs on a single by Lakin Gustafson and a double by Brittany Fardink with an error.

Anderson shut down the Lady Golden Eagles’ offense the rest of the way giving up only two walks and a triple, while striking out six in the last three innings.

The Lady Thunderbirds plated their other run in the bottom of the sixth by a lead off walk by Cianna Braymiller. The Lady Golden Eagles threatened in the bottom of the seventh, but a great defensive catch in leftfield by Brittany Fardink and two strikeouts shut them down.

Taylor Betz threw a complete game for Cleveland Hill, striking out nine, giving up just five hits and one walk.

“We played with heart and determination and never gave up,” said Lady Thunderbirds coach Susan Teets. “Plays were made when needed and strikeouts were put on the board in opportune times. Key hits were made by the Fardink’s, Katelyn and Brittany.”

No. 4 Chautauqua Lake will now play in the Section VI C1 Final against No. 3 Cassadaga Valley Thursday.
