North Collins shuts out Eden, 6-0

OBSERVER Staff Report

EDEN — North Collins pulled of a 6-0 shutout victory at Eden on Wednesday in non-league baseball.

Brandon Zielinski picked up the win on the mound for North Collins, tossing four innings and allowing just two hits and four walks along with six strikeouts.

Harley Mehnert drove in two RBI singles at the plate to lead North Collins at the plate. Zielinski and Nick Woronowski each pitched in with multiple hits at the plate. Zielinski recorded two singles; Woronowski ripped a two-RBI single at the plate.

“It was a good tune-up for us to keep everybody sharp,” said North Collins coach Paul Kellner. “We’re playing good defense. Yesterday we played Springville and Trevor Mercado only had two strikeouts so we had to come up with 19 outs on defense. We played error-free behind our pitchers, so I think we’re moving in the right direction. I think out defense will step up in playoff time when it counts most.”

North Collins earned the No. 1 seed in the Class D playoff bracket. After a bye week they will play the winner of Pine Valley/Clymer in a semifinal at home.
