Dunkirk Little League wins Sectionals opener

Special to the OBSERVER

BOLIVAR — The Dunkirk Little League 11-12 year old All-Stars opened the Section 1 tournament with a 13-8 extra-inning victory over Whirlpool (Niagara Falls) in Bolivar.

Dunkirk carried a three-run lead into the bottom of the sixth inning but could not close the contest, and later used a five-run rally of their own in the seventh inning to take the lead and secure the win.

Four Dunkirk hurlers pitched effectively against a potent Whirlpool offense. Javi DeJesus, Bryson Travis, Alex Ahlstrom and Jack Lanski (winning pitcher) combined to allow just six hits and totaled 13 strikeouts on the day.

At the plate, DeJesus and Lanski each had a home run among their three hits. Gio Pagan added three singles; Ahlstrom and Adam Fred added a pair of singles, while Tyler Karin hit a timely triple during the seventh inning rally.

For Whirlpool, Trevor Kennedy homered while Nolan Barker doubled and singled.

Dunkirk’s next contest will be Tuesday night at 6 p.m. in Bolivar. Their opponent will be the winner of the Sunday tilt between Penfield and LeRoy.
