PORTLAND — Fredonia High Schools’ boys and girls cross country teams both won their meets Tuesday at a Lake Erie State Park event.
Fredonia’s Diego Rey ran the 5K course in 17:34 to take first place among the boys. The girls’ race was also won by a Fredonian, Emily Brown, who clocked a time of 21:48.
Josh Johnson took second place for the Hillbillies with a 17:40 time. Other top finishers for Fredonia included Alec Schrader in fourth place at 18:08, Chris Annear in 10th place at 20:28 and 14th-place Grayson Pratt, who ran the course in 21:01.
On the girls’ side, the Lady Hillbillies’ Hannah Gullo managed a third-place finish in 22:23. Savannah Lashbrook followed her in fourth place (22:39) and Anna Buchanan picked up fifth place (24:22). Then Ashley Holt came in sixth, with a time of 25:05.
For the boys’ event, the Hillbillies had a score of 24, while Frewsburg scored 43 and Jamestown 59. Randolph registered an incomplete score. Among the girls, Fredonia got a 15, Jamestown 50, and Frewsburg and Randolph were incomplete. Both Fredonia teams moved to 3-0 on the season.
Fredonia cross country coach Carol Zirkle enjoyed her teams’ effort.
“Overall, we had a good race from both teams,” she said. “Some of the athletes worked on different strategies and it worked well for them.”
Zirkle said the event was Fredonia’s only home meet this season, and the final home event for five seniors. The seniors are Pratt, Gullo, Holt, Johnson and Claire Stokes.
The next event for FHS is at Wayne Central School in Rochester on Saturday, on the same course where the season-ending statewide meet will occur.
