Fredonia held off Southwestern, 3-2, in a CCAA West girls tennis match Wednesday that kept the Lady Hillbillies undefeated in the division.

Two of the three singles matches went to Fredonia (5-1, 4-0). Kelsey Vianese topped the Lady Trojans’ Olivia Persia 6-4, 6-1 in the second singles match. The third singles contest saw Fredonia’s Alicia Kluck beat Hiba Munir 6-3, 6-3.

“Although Bernie Gens lost at first singles (to Mikayla Johnson, 6-2, 6-4), she played a really tough two-hour match and had some rallies lasting over 50 hits,” Fredonia coach Lisa Johnston said.

Fredonia’s first doubles team of Jill Valvo and Selin Arnavut overcame a 0-3 deficit in the second set to win 6-1, 7-5 over Isabella Grajalva and Alyssa Pickard. In second doubles, Fredonia’s Nicole Cosico and Katie Panasci lost 2-6, 7-5, 10-6 in a match that featured a super tiebreaker (first to 10 points) instead of a third set to decide the winner, due to gathering darkness.

Fredonia will play Dunkirk at home today.

CHAUTAUQUA LAKE 4, DUNKIRK 1

MAYVILLE — The Chautauqua Lake Lady Thunderbirds girls tennis team (2-3, 2-4) pulled out a CCAA West victory over the Dunkirk Lady Marauders Wednesday in its homecoming match.

The Lady Thunderbirds’ singles players swept all three of their contests in straight sets.

The doubles teams each needed to pull their victories out in 10-point super tiebreakers after splitting two sets.

The first doubles team for Chautauqua Lake, Elizabeth Marshaus and Logan Walczak, edged out Hannah Oser and Maddie Gokey, 2-6, 7-6(7-3), 10-6. Dunkirk’s second doubles team of Zoe Loeb and Hannah Sanchez grabbed the Lady Marauders’ lone win of the evening, winning 7-5, 4-6, 10-5 over Tiffany Parsons and Abby Paulus.

The Lady Thunderbirds travel to Maple Grove Monday for their next match. Dunkirk (0-4, 0-6) goes to Fredonia today.
