North Collins defeats Gowanda in volleyball

NORTH COLLINS — The North Collins Lady Eagles (1-1 overall, 1-0 league) start 2017 much like last season, with a win over Gowanda (0-1, 0-1), 3-1, in high school volleyball.

North Collins, who ended last regular season undefeated in league play, fell in the first game, 24-26, but overcame the quick loss by winning three straight, 25-16, 25-12, 25-13. The win was a team effort as returners from last year are placed in new roles.

“We were in a bit of a transitional phase,” North Collins coach Dave Burgstahler said. “We lost three starters for the year. We have two eighth graders that are playing middle, who are McKenna Rice and Micheala. We also have a foreign exchange student, Irene Mancuso. She had eight kills and four aces, which led the team in kills.”

Isabelle Wroblewski had six kills and three aces, while MaKenna Williams had 16 assists, two kills and two aces in the victory.

Despite the win, Burgstahler understands his team is still adjusting to having old players in new positions.

“With all of those things going on: we have new middles and the middles from last year, Isabelle is playing right and Baylee Romano is playing outside. And we have a new setter, MaKenna Williams,” the coach said. “We have a lot of players back, but the team dynamic is new this year.”

North Collins travels to Cassadaga Valley today. The game starts at 6 p.m.
