Fredonia women’s tennis team closes season with victory

BINGHAMTON — Fredonia closed out the 2017 season Sunday with a 5-3 win over Oswego State in the consolation round of the SUNYAC Women’s Tennis Tournament.

Singles winners were sophomore junior Olivia Miller at No. 2, junior Adriana Speach at No. 5, and junior Avril King at No. 6.

Miller and sophomore Anna Chiacchia, and King and junior Mallory Mecca won their doubles matches at No. 1 and No. 3, respectively.

Miller’s win at No. 2 was the deciding point and gave her 11 wins in 2017, a new Fredonia single-season record. It was her 26th career win, also a Fredonia team mark.

“The women fought through adversity,” Blue Devil Head Coach Greg Catalano said. “They played three times in three consecutive days (and they) were playing without Sarah Bunk, our sensational freshman.”

Because of an academic commitment, Bunk did not play singles Friday at Geneseo nor singles and doubles Saturday and Sunday in Binghamton. She finished the season 10-0 in singles and 10-1 in doubles. It was the first undefeated season by a starting singles player in team history.

Sunday also marked the final collegiate match for the lone senior, captain Chloe Karnisky. She had a 6-3 singles record in 2017 and a 17-8 career record, tied for seventh on the team list. Moving up into a tie for fourth on the career list was Chiacchia, who has a 19-4 singles record in two seasons.

The Blue Devils finished 10-3 overall for the second straight season.

“This was by far our most impressive win of the season,” Catalano said. “I’m very proud of the women.”

Bentham is SUNYAC Defensive Player of Week

The State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) has selected Fredonia goalie Ty Bentham as the Men’s Soccer Defensive Athlete of the Week.

Bentham came up huge for Fredonia, saving all 16 shots he faced, as the Blue Devils went 1-0-1 in overtime contests against Potsdam and Plattsburgh. In almost 205 total minutes in net, the sophomore recorded eight saves in their victory at Potsdam and added another eight in the 0-0 game at Plattsburgh, which included a clutch diving save in the final seconds of overtime to keep the game tied up.
