Dunkirk boys win hoops opener

OBSERVER Staff Report

LANCASTER — Dunkirk High School’s boys varsity basketball team won its season opener Wednesday night, beating the host team of the Lancaster Tournament by a 57-52 score.

The Legends had a three-point halftime lead over Dunkirk, but the Marauders outscored the home team, 16-8, in the third quarter and never looked back on their way to victory.

“In the first half, we had some foul trouble with Tyreek Kristian-Johnson, so it took him out of rhythm,” Dunkirk coach Andrew Krenzer said. “In the second half, he focused on keeping them in front of him on defense. That, combined with rebounding, helped us pull away.

“Devaun Farnham-DeJesus did a great job of picking and choosing his open shoots, especially in the second half,” the coach added. “That helped carry us as well.”

Farnham-DeJesus led all scorers with 21 points, while Kristian-Johnson netted 17. Jakob Jerebko of Lancaster also put up 17 points.

Three Marauders made it into double digits in the rebounding department. Darnell Butts brought down 16 boards, while Kristian-Johnson had 15 and Farnham-DeJesus was credited with 12.

Dunkirk’s next game is the championship game of Lancaster’s tournament, set for Friday. The opponent will be Health Sciences.
