Dunkirk’s Gawronski wins first start in goal for Buffalo State

OSWEGO — Freshman Bri Gawronski, a Dunkirk native, made 25 saves in her first collegiate start to backstop Buffalo State (2-4) to a 2-1 road victory over Oswego (3-2) in a Northeast Women’s Hockey League contest Sunday.

The Lakers got on the scoreboard first with less than three minutes remaining in the first period, but Buffalo State evened the score with Erin Gehen’s second goal of the season from Kayla Kopinski and Courtney Cavarello early in the second frame.

The Bengals slowed Oswego for the remainder of the middle period holding an 8-3 edge in shots.

Brooke Krantz netted what would prove to be the game-winner with an assist from Bri Carroll midway through the third, and Gawronski and Buffalo State would hold off a late surge by the Lakers.

Oswego finished with a 26-21 edge in shots, including 15-6 in the final 20 minutes.
