Hockey team goes viral

Special to the OBSERVER

Fredonia men’s hockey went viral with a video of a post-game celebration in which they channel professional Rick Flair.

The video, featuring reserve goaltender Nick Harper, has had over 379,000 views since it was posted following a 4-3 home win Nov. 4 over then No. 6-ranked Geneseo. It got additional air play Thursday when it was re-tweeted by NHL on NBC Sports and was featured on the NHL Network’s “NHL Now” program.

The Blue Devils have been doing the cheer for a couple of seasons, even before Flair, also known as The Nature Boy, was featured by ESPN on its “30 in 30” documentary series.

“The seniors last year wanted to start this new tradition,” Harper explained. “(It) really gets everyone fired up (and) I’m happy to do it this year. So after a win we pick a player of the game and they hammer a puck into our “kill” board. After that the chant starts and the boys follow along!”

Here’s what Harper yells — his teammates adding Flair’s trademark “Woo!” before finally joining in.

“You’re talking to the Rolex wearin’, diamond ring wearin’, kiss stealin’, wheelin’ dealin’, limousine ridin’, jet flyin’ son of a gun. And I’m having a hard time holding these alligators down. Woo!”
