Lobos lay licking on Blue Devils, 110-75

HAMBURG — The Fredonia men’s basketball team fell to John Carroll, 110-75, on Friday at the Hilbert Hawk Tip-Off Tournament. Ian Helps poured in 28 points, including 12 of 13 shooting from the free-throw line to pass the Devils.

Isaiah Ice added 12 points and Kay Jackson had 8 points, and team highs with 8 rebounds and 4 assists. Jonathan McDonald had 9 points off the bench and matched Jackson’s 8 rebounds.

John Carroll had its biggest advantage from three-point range, converting 14 of 35, compared to 1 of 10 long-range shooting by the Devils. The Blue Streaks shot 48 percent from the field compared to 42 percent for Fredonia. The Devils held a 41-37 advantage on the boards and convert 26 of 34 (77 percent) from the line compared to 18 of 21 (86 percent) for John Carroll.

The Blue Streaks (1-0) had six players in double-digit scoring led by Jackson Sartain with 27.

The Devils (0-2) take on the loser of the Hilbert/SUNY Poly game at 1:00 p.m. today.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Devils fall to Carnegie-Mellon in season opener

MEADVILLE, PA. — The Fredonia women’s basketball team lost 75-47 to Carnegie Mellon in its season opener at the Greg Reynolds Memorial Tip-Off Classic on Friday afternoon at Allegheny College.

Freshman Sydney Turley had 16 points in her college debut. Chautauqua Lake alumna Jenna Einink (Westfield), added 12 points and Jacque Law had eight.

Carnegie Mellon opened the game on a 16-2 run over the first 5:23. Fredonia’s only points came on a jumper by Einink. C-M led 40-21 at the half.

The Tartans were led by sophomore Laurel Pereira with a career-high 20 points. She was one of four players in double digits.

The Tartans (1-0) shot 41 percent from the floor while holding the Blue Devils to 28 percent shooting.

Fredonia takes on Penn State Behrend today at 11 a.m. to wrap up the classic.
