Steelers tie, lose on opening weekend

The defending state champion Dunkirk-Fredonia hockey Steelers came away with one of four possible points this weekend in visits to Cheektowaga and the Harborcenter in Buffalo.

On Saturday, the Steelers came back from a 2-0 first-period deficit to earn a 2-2 overtime tie against Cheektowaga. Nolan Mages had a goal and an assist while Shaun McGinty had the other goal for Dunkirk-Fredonia. Alex Venn, Jacob DiFonzo and Jackson Taylor chipped in with assists.

Steeler goalie Gabriel Persch was outstanding in net making 39 of 41 saves, including a penalty shot in overtime. Head coach Mark Taylor also commended the work of defenseman Michael Persch.

On Sunday night, the Steelers were outmatched against Orchard Park in downtown Buffalo, 8-1. Goaltender Nicholas Novelli made 40 saves while Michael Persch had the lone goal and Brandon Prentiss was credited with the assist.

The Steelers home slate begins Sunday at Steele Hall ice arena when the team takes on Canisius. Game time is 4:45 p.m.
