Chautauqua Lake beats Westfield as Pope scores 41
OBSERVER Staff Report
WESTFIELD — Chautauqua Lake senior phenom Devin Pope was at it again Monday, scoring 41 points and missing a triple double by three steals as the Thunderbirds (2-0) used a fourth-quarter surge to beat Westfield, 74-66, in non-league high school boys basketball.
The game was tied after a quarter, and Westfield (2-1) held narrow leads of three at halftime and one after three periods. But Wolverines coach Bob North said his team made too many errors in the final quarter to close it out.
“About four minutes to go, they had a little spurt where we turned it over a lot,” North said. “Of Pope’s seven steals he probably had five in the fourth quarter where he got out ahead of us for layups.
“I thought if we could him to 35 we could beat them. … I was pleased we played with him, I wasn’t sure we could,” the coach continued. “We made a lot of silly mistakes in the fourth quarter. I have a lot of young kids so that’ll happen. We go there next Thursday so I hope we give them a good game.”
Brian Anderson scored 15 for the visiting Thunderbirds. Westfield’s leading scorers of Julio Torres, Nathan Culbreth and Michael Johnson all had 10 points.
Pope and Anderson were also the game’s top rebounders, with 16 and 10 boards, respectively. Culbreth added 10 rebounds and seven assists for the Wolverines.
Chautauqua Lake’s next game is at Franklinville on Monday. Westfield also returns to the court Monday, travelling to Forestville.
