DHS boys swim team beats Olean

The Dunkirk High boys swim team defeated Olean, 90-82, Thursday in a meet postponed by Tuesday’s heavy snow.

“Best moments of the night (were) back-to-back 1-2-3 sweeps of the backstroke and the breaststroke,” said Dunkirk head coach Allie Saye, whose Narwhals also include swimmers from the Brocton, Cassadaga Valley, Fredonia and Westfield school districts.

Bill Osula was the backstroke winner in 57.73, followed by Adam Fred (1:10.29) and Finn Frerichs (1:13.78). Mathew Brockelbank took the breaststroke for the Narwhals in 1:11.76, with teammates Diego Rey (1:18.43) and Ronan Murphy (1:24.92) also reaching the podium.

Dunkirk’s Owen Bates had a new personal best time of 1:08.75 in winning the 100-yard fly. Osula also won the 200 freestyle event, with a time of 1:59.71. Brockelbank took the 50 freestyle in 25.01.

The Narwhals won two team events. In the 200 medley relay, Fred, Brockelbank, Bates and Nick Wittmeyer had a victorious time of 2:01.49. The 400 free relay team of Wittmeyer, Osula, Fred and Brockelbank won in 4:02.94.

“But better than the win was watching the guys strengthen as a team, supporting each other through every event, and even cheering on an opponent who had lost his goggles, as he struggled to finish the fly,” Saye said. “Almost everyone had at least one personal best, and Coach Ball and I are extremely pleased with the results.”
