Lady Eagles leave 0-19 season behind with win

SALAMANCA — The past is the past for North Collins girls basketball (1-0). After a winless 2016-17 season in 19 games, the Lady Eagles soared Monday to defeat the Salamanca Lady Warriors (0-1) on the road, 38-33, behind Myah Gabel’s 19 points.

The first quarter was tied up at 10-all, but North Collins was up by five going into half, 21-16. The Lady Eagles stayed poised by fighting on defensive and offensive ends by giving Salamanca the third quarter by a point and taking the fourth by a point.

Ultimately, North Collins took the win against a team it lost to twice last year by 20 and 22 points.

“They were excited and to play in a close game right out of the gate and come out with a victory will be a big confidence boost,” first-year returning coach Vincent Fininzio Jr. said.

Salamanca’s Dessa Dowdy was the offensive threat on the night as she netted 28 points. Kylee Dowdy added three points and Leyla Slade had two points of her own.

North Collins, along with Gabel’s 19, had Isabelle Wroblewski scoring seven, Baylee Romano netting six and Robin Hidy adding four to the Lady Eagles’ score.

Gabel and Dessa Dowdy were the two prominent shooters on the night, which set up for an interesting battle for defenses early in the season.

“Their scorer was tough down low,” Fininzio said. “We didn’t match the physicality at times during the game, giving her many second-chance points. Myah got out on the break and finished well. She finished 7 for 12 from the free throw line.”

North Collins looks to extend the winning streak to two as it hosts Silver Creek on Friday with a 6 p.m. tipoff. Salamanca will travel to Forestville on Friday with that game starting at 6 p.m. as well.
