Lady Hillbillies lose to No.5-ranked team

SYRACUSE — The Fredonia Lady Hillbillies girls basketball team fell to the Bishop Ludden Lady Gaelic Knights, 90-41, in the first round of the Bishop Ludden tournament in Syracuse. Bishop Ludden is ranked No. 5 in the state in Class B.

“We were here last year, and last year when we played them they were No. 4, so we were familiar with them,” Fredonia coach Carol Zirkle said. “We played much better last year. … They’re a very good team. There’s lots of players that can shoot, and they can drive the ball well. … As a team, they’re very fast. We did not handle the game the way I had hoped we would have.”

Katie Price finished with a team-high 12 points for Fredonia in the loss.

“We didn’t do well in transition,” Zirkle stated. “We didn’t make good offensive decisions and that caused them to get on the fast break, and we didn’t do a good job of defending against it. … Hopefully we have learned from the experience and we’ll have improved from going up against this type of competition.”

Bishop Ludden now moves on to the championship game to play Amherst. Fredonia takes on Whitesboro, an Oneida County school, in the consolation match today at 4 p.m.
