Team captain Nolan Mages had himself a day on Sunday.

Mages, senior and three-year member of the varsity Dunkirk-Fredonia Steelers hockey team, had a pair of goals and assists as the defending state champions picked up their first win of the year, 6-3, at Steele Hall over Wilson-Newfane.

Down 1-0 late in the first, Mages helped get Dunkirk-Fredonia on the board setting up defenseman Austin Venn who fired in a bouncing shot from the blue line. The Steelers tied it again in the second period when Carter D’Agostino got behind the defense and went in all alone on the Wilson-Newfane goalie placing a shot on the short side making it 2-2. Defenseman Michael Persch was credited with the assist.

Mages got his first goal of the game late in the second with assists being credited to Jared Heyden and D’Agostino.

In the third, it was all Steelers. Heyden scored 48 seconds into the period giving the Steelers their first lead of the game. About five minutes later, Stephen Aldrich scored right off the face-off boosting the lead to two. Mages capped his big day with 1:15 left scoring on an assist from Heyden.

Defense, led by Persch, Jackson Taylor, Zach Rybak, Venn and Jimmy Rush, limited Wilson-Newfane to four shots in the third period and 24 shots for the game. Dunkirk-Fredonia had 38 shots on the day.

Nicolas Novelli was excellent in net for Dunkirk-Fredonia, making 21 saves.

The Steelers, 1-2-1, take on Olean in a divisional game Thursday night in Steele Hall. Game time is 7 p.m.
