PV boys lose to E’ville

SOUTH DAYTON — The Pine Valley Panthers fell to Ellicottville, 67-45, in a CCAA East 2 boys basketball matchup on Tuesday at Pine Valley.

Ellicottville (10-1, 3-1) held a 21-13 advantage after the first quarter, and outscored Pine Valley in every quarter. The veteran Eagles squad had good spacing and ball movement, according to Pine Valley coach Chris Buczek, who added “you could tell they’ve played together for a long time.”

Pine Valley (5-6, 2-2) had no answers for 6-foot-6 center Elliot Bowen, who led the Eagles with 25 points and 16 rebounds.

“It’s tough to defend him with one guy, but when you double him, they get open looks (in other areas),” said Buczek.

Steven Rowland added 14 points for the Eagles, while Griffin Chudy had 10 points and nine assists.

Pine Valley was led by Zach Mansfield with 18 points and five steals. Mansfield had a game-high three field goals made from beyond the three-point-line.

Pine Valley travels to Forestville next, on Thursday, while Ellicottville hosts North Collins on Thursday, as well.

GOWANDA 71, RANDOLPH 47

GOWANDA — The Gowanda Panthers are usually the team on the right side of impressive scoring nights. Tuesday, that was not the case. Randolph sophomore Tyler Hind scored 40 points to lead the Cardinals past Gowanda, 71-47, on Tuesday in a CCAA Div. 1 East boys basketball game.

Hind had eight shots from beyond the arc, as part of a game-high 14 field goals for the sophomore guard. Hind also added ten assists, accounting for the team’s scoring on all but four possessions for the Cardinals.

“He knocked down his shots,” said Gowanda coach Rob Catalino. “He handles the ball well, and he is very composed.”

Gowanda’s leading scorer, Nate Brawdy, was held to 14 points for the Panthers, which is well below his season average.

Eighth-grader Gabe McCoy also added eight points and a game-high 14 rebounds for Randolph.

“Randolph played a nice game,” said Catalino. “They are a good team.”

Gowanda is looking to improve now that the whole team is together and ready to play. The Panthers have battled injuries, illness, and other various ineligibility concerns throughout the year, but Catalino is excited to have his whole team available for the toughest part of its season.

Gowanda travels to Silver Creek on Thursday, to face off with the division-leading Black Knights.

FRANKLINVILLE 85,

NORTH COLLINS 52

NORTH COLLINS — The Franklinville Panthers defeated the North Collins Eagles, 85-52, in CCAA East 2 high school boys basketball action Tuesday.

Isaac Kopp had a big night for Franklinville (9-2, 4-0), pouring in 34 points, including eight three-point shots.

“He had seven (threes) in the first half,” North Collins coach Jan Warren said. “He was on fire. Most of his other baskets were long twos.”

Brandan Zielinski had 23 points, including five treys of his own, for North Collins (4-9, 1-3). The senior also had seven rebounds.

“I can’t ask more for them, they’re playing hard,” Warren said of his Eagles. “Effort’s not the problem, we just can’t seem to get shots to fall. I’m proud because they didn’t stop playing … If we can keep getting that kind of effort, we’ll win some games.”

North Collins travels to Franklinville Thursday to continue its CCAA East 2 divisional schedule.
