Devils off to SUNYAC track championships

The State University of New York Athletic Conference will conduct its annual indoor track and field championship meet today and Saturday at Brockport’s Special Events & Recreation Center. All 10 schools in the conference will compete for team titles based on scoring through the top eight places in individual events.

There are 10 men’s events and seven women’s events in which Fredonia has top-eight performers, led by senior Mikayla Capestrani (Jamestown), who’s top ranked in the women’s pole vault. Her school-record vault of 11 feet, 11 3/4 inches (6.65 meters) is also ranked No. 16 in NCAA Division III.

There are also two Fredonia ranked No. 2 in their respective events. senior Brittany Feldman (Jamestown/Southwestern) in the 400 meters and senior Sarah Couperus in the high jump. Ranked No. 3 in both the women’s shot put and the women’s 20-pound weight throw is senior Rachel Williams.

Other top-eight performances among Fredonia women are senior Kristen Sawyer, fourth in the pole vault; junior Hannah Kurbs, fifth in the 5,000 meters. In addition, the distance medley relay of freshman Sarah Kurbs, freshman Ariel Davis, sophomore Kelly O’Hara, and junior Emily Maguire, is ranked third.

On the men’s side, seniors Justyn Haines and Damone Brown are ranked second, respectively, in the pole vault and the shot put. In other field events, junior Nick Serafin and senior Mitchel Paciga are tied for fifth in the high jump, and sophomore Jordan Toland is eighth in the 35-pound weight throw.

Top-eight Blue Devil men’s runners are junior Ethan Francis (Dunkirk), third in the 5,000 meters and seventh in the 3,000 meters; and senior Merlin Joseph Jr., eighth in the 800 meters. Fredonia’s distance medley relay team is fourth with Joseph, freshman Mike DeLand (Dunkirk), senior Mitch Loiacano, sophomore Aidan Pollard, and senior Chase Towse listed as possible participants.
