OLEAN — The Dunkirk Lady Marauders came away with a 59-55 win in Olean against the Lady Huskies Thursday night in CCAA West 1 high school girls basketball action.
“It was a close game throughout,” Dunkirk coach Darnell Baldwin said. “Alexis Tofil hit two free throws with 9.2 seconds left to seal the win for us.”
Dunkirk (5-10, 2-6) had three double-digit scorers: Amari Carter with 16, Olivia Smith with 12 and Kymi Nance with 10. Nadara O’Dell brought down 11 rebounds and Nance had six boards herself.
Sophia Aiello was game-high scorer with 28 points for Olean (7-9, 2-6), while her sister, Hannah Aiello, contributed 10 points for the Lady Huskies.
“We really showed that we can play with the best of them if we play the right way,” Baldwin said.
Dunkirk’s next game is another CCAA West 1 contest, 1:30 p.m. Saturday at home against Falconer.
PORTVILLE 44, SILVER CREEK 28
SILVER CREEK — The Silver Creek Lady Black Knights basketball team fell to Portville, 44-28, in a CCAA Div. 1 East girls basketball matchup on Thursday.
Silver Creek (8-7, 2-5) fell behind by double-digits after a tough second quarter in which the Lady Knights only scored two points. Silver Creek “couldn’t get into a rhythm,” according to head coach Tammy Rice.
The Lady Knights improved on the offensive end in the second half, highlighted by eighth-grader Abby Rice scoring ten of her team-high 14 points in the second half. However, it just was not enough, as Portville kept its lead the rest of the way.
Silver Creek’s top rebounders were Kiera Brennan with eight, Tessa Douglas with seven, and Rice with six.
Portville (9-6, 4-3) was led in scoring by Karly Welty and Carley Williams, who each had 14 points.
“Portville is a very strong team,” said Rice. “Welty is a great player.”
Welty, who averages 18 points per game, was coming off a 40 point game against Randolph in her last game.
Rice was pleased with her defense on Welty, but Silver Creek was unable to score enough on Thursday to get the win.
Silver Creek looks to bounce back when the Lady Knights travel to Salamanca on Monday in another Div. 1 East game.
