School records in pole vault, 300 meters

Special to the OBSERVER

ITHACA — Two Fredonia seniors from the same hometown broke women’s indoor track and field school records Saturday, records which they already held.

Jamestown natives Mikayla Capestrani and Brittany Feldman set new marks in the pole vault and the 300 meters, respectively, at Cornell University’s Marc Deneault Invitational inside Barton Hall.

Capestrani, who attended Jamestown High School, cleared 11 feet, 11 3/4 inches — four inches higher than seven days earlier at Tiffin, Ohio — to finish second in the event Saturday. She also moved to No. 16 on the NCAA Division 3 indoor performance list this winter. Feldman, a Southwestern High School graduate, was clocked in 41.30 seconds, which shaved 1.33 seconds off her previous school record set in Dec. 2015. She finished third in the event behind two women from Cornell, a Division 1 program.

Other Deneault highlights by Fredonia women:

Competing alongside Capestrani, senior Kristen Sawyer finished fourth in the pole vault by clearing a personal-best 11 feet, 5 3/4 inches — now No. 34 on the NCAA DIII performance list. As an aside, the Barton Hall record in the pole vault is still held by Jenn Stuczynski Suhr, a Fredonia native and Olympic champion, who cleared 15 feet, 1 1/2 inches in 2007.

In the triple jump, freshman Cassie Serafin had a personal-best 10.78 meters (35 feet, 4 1/2 inches) to finished fourth — first among NCAA DIII women. Also, senior Sarah Couperus was fourth in a field of 18 high jumpers, and junior Emily Maguire finished fourth in the 600 meters.Mens’ indoor track and field

ITHACA — Fredonia freshman sprinter Michael Salvati moved up an indoor track and field performance list during Saturday’s Marc Deneault Invitational at Cornell’s Barton Hall.

Previously No. 8 in the 300 meters, Salvati moved up two spots to No. 6 with a time of 36.39 seconds. He finished third in the event behind two men from Syracuse, an NCAA Division 1 program, and was eighth in the 200 meters — an event in which he’s already No. 10 on the Fredonia performance list.

In other Fredonia running news, senior Merlin Joseph Jr. was sixth out of 34 men in the 800 meters; junior Ethan Francis (Dunkirk) ran a personal-best 4:24.36 indoor mile — an improvement of nearly five seconds — to finish eighth in a field of 36; and senior Mitch Loaicano finished fifth in his first collegiate 600 meters.

Field highlights included junior Trent Howard (Chautauqua Lake) and freshman Jonah McGrath each clearing 13 feet, 2 1/2 inches in the pole vault to finish third and fourth, respectively, based on fewest misses; senior Damone Brown third in the shot put — first among NCAA DIII throwers; and seventh-place finishes by junior Nick Serafin in the high jump, and sophomore Jordan Toland in the 35-pound weight throw
