It was an offensive explosion for the Dunkirk-Fredonia Steelers on Thursday night in Steele Hall ice arena.

Leading by only 2-1 after two periods, the Steelers struck early and often in the third period in blasting the Olean Eagles, 7-1. Led by the first line of Jared Hayden, Nolan Mages and Carter D’Agostino, the three players contributed 11 points in the victory.

“We didn’t execute in the second period or work hard enough,” Coach Mark Taylor said. “We came out in the third and I stressed with these boys that we have to win the third period in our house … and they did that tonight.”

D’Agostino had three of the first four goals, including two in the first three minutes of the final stanza, while Mages had the first goal and tallied three assists. Hayden also had four points with a goal and three assists.

Defensively, the Steelers kept many of the 32 Olean shots to the outside. Steeler defensemen Zach Rybak, Jackson Taylor, Austin Venn, Alex Rush and Jimmy Rush were solid throughout the evening.

Goaltender Gabriel Persch also came up big, especially in the second period when Olean put great pressure on the Steelers. Persch finished with 31 saves.

Shaun McGinty and Ian Clement finished the scoring for the Steelers. Venn and Brandon Prentiss also added an assist each.

On Saturday, the Steelers battle Wilson-Newfane in Lockport and Senior Day is Sunday at home against Roy-Hart at 4:45 p.m. Ceremonies for the day will begin around 4:15.
