Steelers top Wilson-Newfane, 4-2
LOCKPORT — Make it two in a row for the Dunkirk-Fredonia Steelers — and for forward Carter D’Agostino. For the second straight game, D’Agostino recorded a hat trick — three goals — in leading the Steelers to a 4-2 victory over Wilson-Newfane.
Goaltender Gabriel Persch also stood out again in goal, stopping 30 of 32 Wilson-Newfane shots on Saturday evening.
Down 1-0 first after an early goal, the Steelers would tie the game at the 7:25 mark of the first. After a shot by Jackson Taylor from the blue line and a tip by Jared Glowniak, Jared Hayden picked up a loose puck and put into the net to tie it.
About three minutes later, D’Agostino would start his spree by scoring on the short-side coming down the left wing giving the Steelers the lead for good. Hayden was credited with one of his two assists.
In the second period, the Steelers dominated outshooting Wilson-Newfane, 11 to 8, before finishing on top in shots by a 34-32 margin. Nolan Mages was credited with an assist as was Tyler Sack.
With the victory, the Steelers move to 7-6-3-1 and can clinch second place in the playoffs this afternoon against Roy-Hart. Earlier this year, Roy-Hart dumped the Steelers, 7-4, in Lockport.
Today is senior day with ceremonies beginning at 4:15 p.m. at Steele Hall ice arena.
