T’birds win Class D wrestling title

PORTVILLE — Chautauqua Lake won the Class D Section VI wrestling title Saturday, beating out 10 other teams at the season-ending championship meet.
The Thunderbirds scored 227 points to the 196 of second-place Portville. Another local team that competed, Gowanda, was fifth with 146.5 points.
Chautauqua Lake had four wrestlers win their weight classes.
Brendan Ramsey won the 120-pound bracket with an 8-3 decision in the final over Randolph’s Wyatt Sluga. Austin Bouregois, who won his 100th career match during the tournament, took the 126-pound final over Michael Defoe of Franklinville with a 14-1 major decision. In the 160-pound event, Bryce Rowe of the Thunderbirds beat Franklinville’s Derek Langdon in the final by pinning him in 2:05. Finally, Ben Szymanowski of Chautauqua Lake beat Matthew Lange of Wilson by technical fall at 3:30 of the 220-pound final.
Gowanda’s David Ball narrowly lost the 99-pound final, dropping an 8-7 decision to Luke Tomlinson of Maple Grove. Third-place finishers included Hunter Harris and Brendon Rowe of Chautauqua Lake and Ethan Fort, Zach Phillips, Mike Liszkiewicz, Noah Francis and Jiyah Mentley-Peters of Gowanda.
