EAST MEADOW — Fredonia’s Bill Osula, a junior, competed in the 50 freestyle event Friday at the New York State swimming championship preliminaries in the Nassau County Aquatic Center on Long Island.

Osula swam the event in 22.49, narrowly missing the qualifying time of 21.88 needed to make today’s finals.

“This meet was a valuable experience for Bill to find out what it will take for him to return next year and make the finals on the second day,” said Fredonia coach Bob Ball. “Bill closes out a successful season which includes breaking the FHS 100 backstroke record that belonged to Greg Rusch since 1979. He now has his sights set for his senior season on Roger Kolodziej’s 50 freestyle record (21.87) and 100 butterfly (55.79), both set in 1982.”
