Pope named co-MVP, pair of Marauders make 1st team

The 2017-18 CCAA Division I West All-League Teams were announced, with many local standouts receiving honors. Chautauqua Lake star Devin Pope was named league Co-MVP, along with Mike Schmidt of Olean. Schmidt’s coach at Olean, Jeff Anastasia, was named League Coach of the Year.

A pair of Dunkirk Marauders — Devaun Farnham-DeJesus and Tyrese Kristan-Johnson — were selected to the 1st Team. Farnham-DeJesus averaged 17.4 points per game, in addition to 7.5 rebounds and 4.8 assists in league play this season. Kristan-Johnson averaged a double-double in league play, with 14.8 points per game and 11 rebounds per game.

Fredonia’s Keith Piper and Chautauqua Lake’s Kyler Majka were both selected to the 2nd Team. Piper, a junior, averaged over eight points a game, along with over two assists and two steals in league play. Majka, also a junior, had 12.3 points per game in league as the second option on the Thunderbirds. Like Piper, Majka also had over two assists and two steals per game in league play.

Honorable Mention selections included three Dunkirk seniors: Noah Sobilo, Darnell Butts and Felix Garcia. Fredonia also had three selections: Reid Tarnowski, Nate Shuart and freshman sharpshooter Tyler Putney. Sophomore Nate Adams was also selected from Chautauqua Lake.
