Registration open for 1891 Opera House run/walk

Registrations are now being accepted from runners and walkers for the 1891 Run for the Fredonia Opera House. This 5K Run and Walk will be held on Sunday, April 29, 2018, starting and ending at Barker Common in downtown Fredonia. The 5K run begins at 9 a.m., followed almost immediately by the Walk.

Awards will be presented to the top three male and female finishers in each age bracket and top three male and female finishers overall. T-shirts are guaranteed to the first 100 registrants.

The course begins on Day Street between Lambert and Church streets adjacent to the Village Hall parking lot, and ends on Church Street directly in front of Village Hall. It includes portions of Temple Street, Central Avenue and Brigham Road, as well as a portion of Ring Road on the State University of New York at Fredonia campus.

Opera House Executive Director Rick Davis notes, “there is a short, small incline at the start of the course; otherwise, this is a flat, fast course. It is USATF-certified (#NY17080JG).”

Runners will follow a lead car provided by the Village of Fredonia Police Department. Walkers will be expected to complete the route on the sidewalk.

In addition, Amy Moritz, Buffalo News sports reporter and author of “I Thought You’d Be Faster: The Quest to Become an Athlete,” will be on hand to sign copies of her book and give a brief talk after the run and prior to the medal ceremony.

This event is the major fund-raiser for the Opera House this year. Funds raised from it will help support programming and general operations for the remainder of 2018.

Runners can register in advance of race day. The cost of pre-registration is $25 for adults, $15 for students (age 21 and under). Race day registration is $30 for adults, but still $15 for students. To register online, visit www.fredopera.org. Registrations also can be made by completing a registration form at the Opera House Box Office, Tuesday-Friday, 1-5 p.m.

The 1891 Fredonia Opera House is a member-supported not-for-profit organization located in Village Hall in downtown Fredonia. A complete schedule of Opera House events is available at www.fredopera.org.
